Weddings in Paradise has it all: Show highlights flowers, bridal fashions, and more.

The 12th Annual Pacific Daily News Weddings in Paradise Show at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort yesterday gave those preparing for their weddings a chance to get ideas and information.

Almost anything one could need to plan a wedding was there to see.

Walking down the stairs to the ballroom, there were bamboo pillars with white drapery that made it feel like you were walking into a wedding.

Outside the ballroom, there were makeup and hairstyle demonstrations by Hair Town and Salon Paradis. Those who signed up could preview hairstyles or makeup for their weddings.

Inside the ballroom, the lighting was romantic, with pink hues and drapery from the center stage. The room was filled with exhibitors that provide various wedding services.

Tess Yao, owner of Sugarnomics, said the event was a great way to get people to know her business.

“We’ve had people ask where we’re located and set up appointments. It’s been really good,” Yao said.

Sugarnomics displayed various wedding cakes. Yao said the wedding cakes she enjoys making are the ones where she can sketch ideas for the clients.

“They give us their theme and their colors and we sketch ideas for them. It feels more personal,” Yao said.

Maria Tenorio, a bride-to-be sometime next year, said the event was a great way to get ideas for her wedding.

“The vendors are good. They provide a lot of information and it helps me narrow my ideas,” Tenorio said.

It was Tenorio’s first time at the event and she enjoyed the various flower arrangements and cakes that could be seen throughout the ballroom. She appreciated the photography booths because it will help her decide which photographer will shoot her wedding.

“It’s hard to find the right photographer. Some of them capture the really good moments. So it’s very helpful to see,” Tenorio said.

There were fashion shows that showcased various wedding styles, and live entertainment throughout the day, including Cantate, Latin dance demonstrations by David and Tomoe Peele, and Reed Meyer.

Bridal Boot Camp

Apaul Quilantang was announced as the winner of PDN’s Bridal Boot Camp Guam: Season 2.

Quilantang competed against three other brides-to-be in the Bridal Boot Camp’s second season. The brides spent 10 weeks dieting and working out at Kotenda’s gym to lose weight and be healthier before their wedding day.

Quilantang was unable to attend the event because she was in the Philippines for a family function. She pre-recorded a video that was presented at the show.

Flavor Flav, Danielle Staub and Lindsay Lohan’s parents among celebrities cashing in on hotline.

D-list Hollywood hotline Dial-A-Star is giving new meaning to the term buzz-hungry celebrity.

Everyone from Lindsay Lohan’s parents, former “Jersey Shore” vixen Angelina Pivarnick, Real Housewife Danielle Staub and Friday additions Flavor Flav and Tiger Woods mistress Loredana Jolie have signed on to turn their buzzing phones into cold hard cash.

Users pay anywhere from $5 to $25 a minute to connect with the object of their obsession and enjoy “completely discreet one on one conversations,” the dialastar.com website promises.

“It’s fun. You get to talk to lots of fans,” Pivarnick, 24, told the Daily News when reached through the service Friday.

“Some guys try to have phone sex with me. They ask me what I’m wearing, what kind of thongs I wear. I’m like, ‘Ew, are you fat and old? What do you look like?’” she told The News, at a rate of $15 per minute. “I amuse it. I’ve made more than $3,000 so far.”

The website, which launched last week, splits the proceeds 50-50 with each star, founder Gina Rodriguez of DD Management told The News.

She said Staub is leading her current stable of some 30 celebs with $9,000 in calls, and hundreds more personalities from reality TV and professional sports are “bombarding” her to join.

“We’re really looking to bring in some big names,” she said, admitting pregnant “Jersey Shore” diva Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi tops her wish list.

“It’s so appealing because the celebrities can take a call and then sign in, do an immediate withdrawal with PayPal and go buy lunch,” she said. “They can talk while they’re shopping and say, “I gotta take one more call before I buy that.’”

Michael Lohan charges $18 a minute, while his estranged ex-wife Dina Lohan commands $25.

“I’m getting inundated. Some calls are productive, but the idiots are calling too. They want to know if they can go out with Lindsay, can they talk to her. I say, ‘No, you can’t,’” Michael Lohan told The News.

The famous father said he didn’t need the money and wanted the company to donate half his earnings to charity.

“We haven’t had any bad experiences yet,” Rodriguez said. “I think because people are spending money, it’s not the haters calling.”

She said average calls are lasting between 30 and 80 minutes, meaning users are spending hundred of dollars a pop.

She said newcomers Flavor Flav and Loredana Jolie were slated to hit the site Friday.

“We’re seeing a lot of repeat callers. It’s so surprising. It’s a lot of women, a lot of housewives,” she said. “It’s just amazing.”

Average U.S. wedding costs $27,000!! Manhattan brides spend the most to get married.

Virginia weddings set you back the least, $14,203, while North and South Dakota brides are frugal with their dresses.

Brides may wear white but costly weddings may put them in the red.

The average price for a U.S. wedding has hit $27,000, including the cost of the honeymoon, according to surveys conducted by TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com, reports ABCNews.com.

And no one spends more than New York brides.

The average Manhattan wedding cost $65,824 in 2011, according to the survey.

They also spent the most on their dresses, on average $2,403.

Brides who live in the boroughs spend plenty to walk down the aisle — $40,356.

Want to get married on scenic Long Island? The average wedding costs around $50,087. A Hudson Valley bride may spend slightly less — $46,560.

Brides in northern or central New Jersey spent an average of $46,600 while those in the southern part of the state spent an average of $38,103.

Not all Americans drop the equivalent of a down payment on a home for their special day and trip to the tropics.

Brides in North and South Dakota spent a far more sensible $745 on their wedding dress.

Virginia brides have the lowest wedding budget at $14,203.

Couples that want to ditch the formalwear and head straight to the honeymoon should consider a Hawaii wedding.

Forty-eight percent of the weddings in the sun-drenched state are “casual.”

Seven Brides‘ to showcase CHS student talents.

The brides and Pontipee brothers look on as “Adam,” played by Pate Hill, and a town suitor wrestle at the town dance festival. From left, are Sarah Foy as “Martha,” Ben Zitting as “Daniel,” Micah Wilkins as “Liza,” Jordan Pace as “Caleb,” Pate Hill as “Adam,” Chris Mabry as a town suitor, Hannah Long as “Sarah,” Ethan Breeding as “Frank,” and Caroline Glover as “Millie.” Herald-Citizen Photo/Bailey Darrow

COOKEVILLE — Cookeville High School student Caroline Glover, or “Millie” as she’s called on stage, spent the last week of her spring break taming the in-laws.

Glover is just one of some 65 CHS students who spent their spring break putting the finishing touches on “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” which will open later this week.

Opening Thursday, March 22 in the CHS auditorium and continuing on the 23, 24, 29, 30 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. each night, the upbeat musical tells the story of “Millie” as she attempts to tame and find mates for her newly-inherited brothers-in-law.

“This has been a great opportunity for bringing together theater resources in our community,” musical director for the show and chorus director at CHS Michael Choate said.

The students have been working under the direction of Choate and local theater leader Kim Frick-Welker who is acting as artistic director for the show.

“Bringing in the community gives us the opportunity to be more flexible,” Choate said. “We have been working every possible hour.”

Frick-Welker has an extensive background in local theater and has several other theater projects currently in motion, but took on the CHS show to help Choate add a fresh approach to the production.

The merging of local resources also has the students working with Shane Langford of Stage One Dance, a former CHS student, on choreography for the dance-heavy show.

“This is a very lively and upbeat show,” Choate said. “There are a lot of acrobatics involved on the dance side. I think it really gave the students a different perspective on what choreography really is.”

The large cast has multiple leads which Choate says will give many of the students a chance to shine, and the story will keep audiences in high spirits.

When “Millie” marries “Adam,” played by Pate Hill, she learns she is also expected to take care of his six unruly, less than charming brothers. “Millie” sets out to marry off the brothers, but teaching the men how to court women proves more difficult than she anticipated.

“This musical will really showcase our program more than any other,” Choate said.

The story takes place in the mountains of Oregon, depicted in the backdrop painted by Mitchell White using mops and brooms.

Several parents also pitched in, Choate said. Cheryl Moore, mother of a CHS student, designed many of the costumes, even creating one of the girls’ dresses out of a sheet purchased at Goodwill.

“It has really been a great collaboration of many hands coming together,” Choate said.

Tickets for “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” are $5 and can be purchased at the door.

Oh come on Katy, at least let her get a honeymoon and free toaster out of it…

Katy Perry isn’t exactly the official face of marital bliss right now, so couldn’t resist offering some advice to bride-to-be Laura Cooney during her hen party.

“We were drinking in Mahiki and Katy was dancing nearby. She ran up to me, saying ‘Don’t do it! Don’t get married!’” said Laura, probably weighting up the pros and cons of jilting someone at the alter.

“I said, ‘I’d thought you’d say that!’ She suddenly caught herself and said, ‘No, really … congratulations.’ She chatted to me for about 10 minutes. Katy was really, really sweet. She wished me luck.”Katy’s reaction is hardly surprising after she was left heartbroken and hurt from her split from Russell Brand at the end of last year; but we suppose warning brides is a better way of dealing with it than throwing iPhones through windows.

Bride’s shock as Queen turns up.

A LUCKY couple enjoyed their very own royal wedding yesterday — when their ceremony was gatecrashed by the QUEEN.

John and Frances Canning were stunned when Her Majesty arrived to congratulate them in person moments after they tied the knot.

The Queen and Prince Philip even took the time to pose for photographs alongside the happy couple.

John and Frances got hitched at Manchester Town Hall at the same time as the Queen was having lunch with 200 local volunteers in an adjacent room.

Hairdresser Frances, 44, of nearby Prestwich, said after her royal encounter: “It was surreal, I couldn’t believe it.

“The Queen spoke to us by our first names. She said I looked lovely and she wanted to wish us all the best for the future. It was very special — it was so lovely that she took the trouble to speak to us.”

Mum-of-two Frances added: “We’re going to have to get a bigger wedding album now. Not many people will have pictures like that.” Businessman John, 48, told how he chatted to Prince Philip while the photos were being taken.

John said: “He was a charming fella — for me it was the icing on the cake. We’ll never forget this day and neither will our guests.

“If we can have half as many happy days together as the Queen and Prince Philip then we will be blessed.”

John knew beforehand that the Queen was due to visit Manchester on his wedding day, and even wrote to Buckingham Palace to jokingly invite her along. He received a reply politely declining the invitation — but the Palace then secretly set up the meeting.A royal source said: “The Queen didn’t want to spoil their day, but did ask if she could meet the bride and groom.”The Queen was visiting Manchester as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations. She also visited the BBC’s new HQ, Salford University and four local hospitals.

‘Something Blue’ for brides-to-be.

Tahoe’s newcomer designer Sarah Gore added a ribbon to the waist of a wedding dress Thursday, one of many details she was finalizing on outfits and dresses for her label, Sarah Renée, in preparation for Sunday’s “Something Blue” bridal show at Horizon Casino Resort.

“For my wedding dresses I only use raw silk,” Gore said while attaching one of the small details on one of her custom-made dresses.

Gore will present some of her white wedding masterpieces, as well as one blue dress, at “Something Blue,” South Lake Tahoe Wedding & Honeymoon Association’s second annual bridal fair.

In her fashion shows, which will take place at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Horizon Ballroom, Gore will present 26 different outfits, including six wedding dresses that she has been working on intensely for the past two weeks.

Her collection also includes outfits for bachelorette parties and engagement dinner dresses. Gore characterizes her creations as very feminine and classy.

“I like to do custom work a lot,” she said.

Her custom-made wedding dresses start at $1,000 depending on details and the time it takes for her to create them.

The 31-year-old designer, who grew up in Zephyr Cove-Round Hill Village, attended South Tahoe High School and later graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. She then moved around to places including Hawaii, Newport or St. Martin to gain experience and inspiration.

“I showed Sarah how to sew when she was a kid, but she really got into it since high school,” said her mother, Grace Gore, owner of the wedding cake store “Cakes by Grace” and SLTWHA treasurer.

Grace Gore organizes the bridal fair with the board members of SLTWHA, but will also offer samples of her cakes during the event.

“The Lake Tahoe area is the perfect family vacation place,” SLTWHA Vice President and Sierra Weddings LLC owner Lori Cramer said. “Besides the beautiful location, the area also offers a variety of activities for guests.”

Sue Novasel, owner of Tahoe Dream Events, a full-service wedding and event coordination company located in South Lake Tahoe, and SLTWHA tradeshow director Stephanie K. Smith said that the members of the home-grown group have promoted and sponsored the event.

The 10-member board, which consists of deejays, event coordinators, lodgers and confectioners, have been organizing the show at the Horizon since January.

“The biggest raffle prizes will be gift certificates for the Lake Tahoe Golf Course, a free four-night stay at The Pine Cone Resort in Zephyr Cove, one of three choices of a Sarah Renée outfit or a wedding cake from ‘Cakes by Grace,’” Smith said.

A raffle, a free bag for the bride with a charming wedding ring attachment for business cards and free champaigne during the fair are just a few of the many treats at “Something Blue.”

“There will be even a ‘man-cave area’ where male visitors can watch basketball during the show,” Gore said.

SLTWHA started in 1993 with just a handful members and today involves 40 local vendors with 110 active members who present their local wedding businesses at the bridal show.

“Something Blue” will begin Sunday at 11 a.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the Horizon Resort and Casino at 775-588-6211 or visit tahoeweddings.org.

Tickets cost $10 with pre-registration or $12 at the door.

No tribal brides for Gujarat boys.

Buying a tribal bride may no longer be easy for boys from upper caste communities that have low sex ratios. Tribals across Gujarat are increasingly resentful of their daughters marrying into communities with few girls because of female foeticide.

The Garasiya tribals of north Gujarat have even issued a diktat to the members not to marry girls outside the community. The leaders met in Shamlaji earlier this month and decided to bar girls from marrying Patels, Brahmins and other communities. A family that allows such a marriage would be fined Rs 50,000. On the face of it, the tribals say they don’t want to create a shortage of girls in their own community, but their fear may stem from deeper factors.

“Members of Adivasi Dungarsinh Garasiya Samaj are often offered cash and jewellery to lure them into marrying their daughters outside the community. At this rate, a time will soon come when our boys will find it difficult to get a bride,” says Kalji Kataria, a tribal leader from Sabarkantha. Kataria say 100-odd Garasia girls were married to Patel boys in Mehsana in last one year alone.

Well-known tribal activist Gandesh Devy says, “There are a number of aspects to the resentment. Tribals want to Sankritize and many have even taken on ‘Patel’ as a surname. But they fear losing their lands. A non-tribal can’t own tribal land unless he is married to a tribal. There have been instances where a non-tribal husband has abandoned his tribal wife after getting ownership of land.”

He adds tribals are also upset about their daughters being treated like lifelong maids in many cases.

Community leaders speculate that at least 20,000 tribal girls have married outside in the past few years. Marriage agents have mushroomed all across Gujarat’s eastern tribal belt. Interestingly, all tribal districts in Gujarat have a healthy child sex ratio of between 900 and 975 girls per 1,000 boys.

Tribal MLAs like Dr Anil Joshiyara of Bhiloda and Amarsinh Vasava of Jhagadia said they were present at the Shamlaji meeting.

“This is a trend which can alter the very character of tribal society if it goes unchecked,” Joshiyara said.

I found an article on the TSA Blog that I am sure all you Bahamas wedding brides would be interested in reading.  In it the Transportation Security Administration gives advise on what brides traveling to a destination wedding should do.

The real relief for me was captured in the topic of the blog post “TSA Says Yes to the Dress.” As most Bahamas wedding brides are usually concern about how they are going to get their wedding dress to the Bahamas, so this was great news and useful information to have for you as you plan your destination wedding in the Bahamas.

The really good news from the TSA is that “Brides-to-be can definitely bring their wedding dress through a security checkpoint.” And what about the screening “Ideally, the dress can lay flat in its garment bag or other packaging and fit through the X-ray machine.”

If your wedding dress can not fit through the X-ray machine, then an officer will screen the dress manually,  which will require opening the garment bag but the TSA is saying “Rest assured that our officers will use gloves for the alternate screening to avoid damaging the dress.”

However, getting pass TSA is only the first hurdle and TSA is also advising “brides to contact their airline to ask about taking their weddin g d ress on the plane. While some aircraft have closets in first class that can hold the dress, others may not, which could cause challenges in storing the dre ss above the seat.”

You should also know that “Airlines will count the dress as a carry-on item, so be sure to learn about your airline’s carry-on policies to avoid having to check any items at the gate.”

Women refs bring new vision to Russian football.

A female referee has been appointed to preside over a reserve game between the men of CSKA Moscow and Lokomotiv Moscow. This marks the beginning of a new era in the Russian football.

Anastasia Pustovoitova is one of the eight FIFA-certified female Russian referees and this will be her first men’s match. She has already worked at women’s international matches, the final of the 2010 women’s under-17 European Championships, and on Friday will become just the second Russian female referee, after Natalia Avdonchenko, officiating at a men’s game.

A year ago Pustovoitova wasn’t thrilled at the idea of women refereeing men’s matches.

“I view it very skeptically. My opinion is that only male referees should work in Russian men’s football,” the Futbol Segodnya website quoted her in February 2011.

“The speed is different there and the psychology is completely different. Yes and there are plenty of male referees, so let it stay as it is.”

But the head of refereeing at the Russian Football Union, Roberto Rosetti, regards it as a useful experience, and eyes to continue the experiment.

“If everything turns out successfully for them, then we can advance women to the top flight,” he stated last week.

While Russia is making just the first steps in that direction, Western Europe already has its heroes. In England, Amy Fearn became the first woman to take charge of a men’s Football League game when she replaced an injured referee in a Championship clash between Coventry City and Nottingham Forest in 2010.

But arguably the most memorable episode involving a female ref Bibiana Steinhaus took place in Germany in October 2010. In the middle of an encounter between Alemannia Aachen and Hertha Berlin Hertha’s Peter Niemeyer went to pat Bibiana on the shoulder, but missed, apparently unintentionally but who knows, and instead grabbed hold of her breast. Steinhaus just laughed it off, which significantly increased the number of her male fans.

Style trend: The mullet show.

Ask us if we wanted a mullet a few years back, and we would have seriously questioned your sanity. But while the terrifying hairdo of the same name thankfully disappeared back into style oblivion as quicky as it reappeared, the mullet skirt is showing off some rather impressive style sticking power.

First spotted on last season’s spring/summer catwalks the mullet (that’s a skirt that’s long at the back and short at the front) has made its mark as the freshest shape of recent seasons, and has become a firm fave with everyone from Nicki Minaj to Blake Lively. Perfect if you can’t choose between a maxi and a mini, and just as hot for day as it is for night, this little hybrid is great for showing off toned pins (whilst concealing any cellulite worries), and brilliant for showcasing knockout heels (definitely not flats, OK?) that would have gone otherwise unnoticed under a maxi. Genius!

Footnotes

  • Alexander McQueen, Antonio Berardi and Lanvin all kicked off the mullet skirt trend last spring, and it’s staying put right the way through to next season too!
  • Remember Blake Lively rocking that awesome billowing grey harnessed Lanvin number literally hours after it hit the runway? Her style star was cemented at that very moment.
  • If a full on-evening gown is just too dressy for you, a mullet gown is the answer. Fun, fresh but still red carpet appropriate (as seen at Oscar De La Renta), make like Olivia P and top off with a gorge blazer for an extra dose of off-kilter mullet- hemmed magic.

Michel Haddi works in focus at Toby Arts

Michel Haddi has photographed some of the biggest names in fashion and entertainment. Art lovers in Dubai can now zoom in on his work at a new exhibition.

It takes a bit of eccentricity to be able to hob nob with celebrities, get up close and personal and take intimate pictures of them. And that is exactly what renowned photographer and publisher Michel Haddi has been doing for the past 20 years.

From Uma Thurman to Johnny Depp, Kate Moss and Angelina Jolie to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, France-born Haddi, who is of Algerian descent, has done them all. Starting off as a fashion photographer in the ’80s with Vogue editions in France, Italy and the UK, and for magazines such as Tatler, Vanity Fair and GQ, Haddi is revered for his contribution to fashion and celebrity photography.

The UAE will get a taste of the artist when he comes to Dubai today to inaugurate an exhibition of his best works at Toby Arts, a new art gallery space in Al Quoz. A collaborative project between art advisory Jamm and Toby, the fashion brand by Saudi fashion designer Hatem Al Akeel, Haddi’s exhibition will also mark the gallery’s debut in the UAE art scene.

“When I think of fashion photographers, past and present, I think of names such as Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Mario Testino. Their works are now sold at galleries and at auction and viewed as art. We felt it was time to showcase the work of a fashion photographer from our own region. Being part Algerian, Michel Haddi represents the mix between East and West,” said Shaikha Lulu M. Al Sabah, partner and founder of Jamm.

In the past 20 years are there any particular subjects that stand out as most memorable?

My most memorable trips have been my trip to the mountains in Yemen (I was lucky to have the name Haddi thanks to the tribe Al Haddi in Yemen); to work with Tim Burton on Mars Attacks! and to have British Vogue send me for three weeks to America all alone to shoot in New York with Debbie Harry, in Detroit with Aretha Franklin, in Houston, Texas, with Bobby Brown, the ex of Whitney Houston, in Texas shooting Willy Nelson, then going to Los Angeles with Jill Jones and back to London. What a wonderful trip.

How has photography as an art evolved, in your opinion?

Photography was always an art, just only few will be able to transcend the commercial into an art form. Nowadays, because of the range of media and the speed of communication, you are able to have more talented youngsters being able to try but again, only few will remain.

Celebrities are not the easiest of subjects. How do you make them comfortable so you can get your money shot?

If you are honest and if you have a point of view and if you know exactly what you are going to do, you have no problem. If you pot around and try to be a star, then you will lose it. It’s the same experience to go and see a doctor: What do you want when you meet a surgeon? A precise guy who tells you exactly what he will do and then you feel secure.

Any favourite celebrity you’ve most enjoyed working with?

I did adore Blondie, she was so sweet. And Veruschka [von Lehndorff, German model and actress] because she always used to call me “Little Buddha”.

What has been your most memorable shoot?

It was with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in Berlin in 1989 for an interview. We were to shoot in a studio and suddenly all the people in the studio were talking, watching the TV and guess what? Two million people were on the wall breaking it down. So I got the idea and we jumped into a cab took and went to the wall and I shot them breaking the wall down while the East German police were booting us.

But the best was yet to come: Now, there were two million people in Friedrichstrasse [a major road and shopping centre that was once bisected by the Berlin Wall] and there were no cabs, nothing. I saw a French car moving slowly and jumped in front of it and I said to the guy: ‘If I told you I am with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, what would you do?’ The guy looked at me and said, ‘Come on, that’s impossible.’ Then with a grin on my face, I said, ‘OK, if I am with them, will you take us back to our hotel, deal?’ And he said, ‘Deal.’ So the crew jumps in the car and all the while this kid is gobsmacked, unable to believe his luck.

In the end, all the boys signed on his forehead.

Any worst celebrity subjects?

There was a young actor I did in New York for a magazine interview. She was so obnoxious and guess what? She never made it.

Any celebrity you would love to work with but haven’t done?

I would love to do a project on Madonna. I have never worked with her.

How did your interest in fashion photography develop?

I love women and I love clothes in the true sense. I mean, I love artists and I can make people happy for two seconds. I am not a doctor nor a rocket scientist, but if I can bring two seconds of happiness when people look at my photos, then I am happy .

Dubai Fashion Week runway shows cancelled.

Dubai: Fashion Week’s autumn-winter 2012 runway shows, slated to run from April 7-12, were this week dropped due to lack of funds, said its event director Rohit Sabikhi.

“Fashion shows all over the world are an expensive proposition. This season, funds needed to be generated and certain things took longer than anticipated,” Sabikhi told Gulf News on Thursday. The bi-annual fashion event has been running in Dubai since 2006.

As many as 30 shows featuring 40 designers were expected to participate in the showcase next month. Sabikhi attributed the change to a “bleak sponsorship scenario” combined with a “lack of support from various bodies.”

“Rather than a cancellation, I would call this a postponement. For the last three seasons, Manoj Bhojwani of Capital Marketing [DFW owners] has been single-handedly investing a lot of money into it. But the recession, the lack of sponsorship deals on the marketing front and lack of assistance from various stakeholders have led to this not-so-ideal scenario,” said Sabikhi. In May 2010, Dubai-based media company Capital Marketing purchased the operating rights to Dubai Fashion Week from Concept Group.

“But we are in fruitful talks with the government and various other supporting groups now. We want to provide a good platform for designers and buyers,” said Sabikhi.

Designers and modelling agencies and other companies involved in the April fashion showcase received an e-mail on Wednesday from by Simon P Lock, Creative Director of DFW informing them of the changes.

“I want to personally assure this decision was not taken lightly by the DFW management. In the end we just weren’t prepared to present an event that wasn’t the best we could possible make it,” said Lock in the e-mail, adding that new dates for the event were being worked on. .

In 2011, Lock was brought on board at DFW — which has seen several leadership changes since its inception in 2006 — to breathe new life into the fashion week.
In cancelling the event, Lock also cited difficulties in finalising support on time.

“Last season the event was presented under the Patronage of the Government and we have been in fruitful discussion with them about their long-term support for the event. Unfortunately this planning process has taken longer than we would have hoped and without it being finalised we are not in a position to be able to fully underwrite the event through designer and commercial sponsor participation,” stated the e-mail.

Companies involved in the event, including designers and modelling agencies, were “shocked” but pragmatic about the cancellation.

“I was shocked to hear about it and I feel sad that an event that put Dubai on the fashion front has been postponed,” said Furne One, a designer and DFW regular. The Filipino had begun work two months ago on the collection he was due to present at DFW.

“Fortunately, my efforts won’t go waste because I will showcase the same collection soon at Australia Fashion Week,” he said. “On one hand I feel bad that I won’t be able to show but on the other hand, maybe it’s a good thing. The organisers may be thinking ‘why put up a show, if it’s going to be bad one’,” added One.

Boutique owner Rohini Gehani, who was planning to bring celebrated Indian couture designer J J Valaya to DFW’s runways, said the cancellation was a surprise.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect them to cancel it but when I spoke to the organisers they said they it was taking longer than expected to get patronage, finance and corporate support. They want to come bigger and larger the next season – which is not a bad thing,” said Gehani, owner of Rivaage.

Model agencies – after a fruitful DFW casting on March 14 – are now in the process of informing models about the changes.

“It was a pretty big surprise. Since Simon Lock came on as the creative director, we had big expectations from Dubai Fashion Week. He is doing a good job so I am really taken aback by the cancellation,” said Georgia Wills, Division Manager of HME Models. She received the e-mail quoted above in response to a query about whether DFW would require European models for the April shows.

Last September, Lock took up the DFW mantle amidst much fanfare and unveiled grand plans for reviving the local fashion showcase, which in past seasons has been criticised as a social event rather than a serious trade event. “I am aware that Dubai Fashion Week — up till this point — has been fairly disappointing. And the new owners sort of recognised that and believed that they need to bring in people who have experience in establishing fashion weeks. That’s where I come in,” said Lock in an interview with Gulf News in September 2011.

Arab women urged to be agents of change.

Activists and officials impress on students from 30 countries the importance of active engagement to make meaningful differences.

Dubai: Despite obstacles facing women in many regions of the world, over 130 female students from 30 countries were urged to help bring about change by simply showing the willingness to engage and champion causes.

A variety of speakers held up examples for students on the concluding day of the Dubai Women’s College’s (DWC) Insight Dubai Conference last week on how to bring about change.

“The Arab world has been through great change in the last year, we have seen revolutions where people took to the streets to demand change,” said Nima Abu Warda, presenter of BBC World’s weekly financial programme on the Middle East. “This is therefore in theory the year of the people and what we see on the ground is part of the process of change.”

She added that, in her view, democracy is not about people agreeing in unison but about those who care — those who bother to vote or champion a cause, which in turn may bring about or effect change.

“What are you doing to enable yourself or other women to effect change? It could be as simple as this,” she said holding up a copy of Desert Dawn, DWC’s quarterly magazine, written and produced by students.

“This [magazine] is about people engaging and bothering, students spending time and energy to put out a thought or a message,” she said. “By sharing thoughts and information we can bring about change, because one person’s idea could cause another to question.”

Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology, delivered a keynote speech on the concluding day of the conference.

Tahrir Square recalled

“The activities of Insight Dubai should strengthen the belief that women, working individually or together, can lead other people toward worthy goals,” he said.

Rana Korayem, a member of a United Nations gender equality entity in Egypt recounted scenes from Tahrir square during the Egyptian revolution last year.

“Women were fighting on the ground with the men during the resistance, but did not realise any concrete gains as their representation in the current parliament is only 2 per cent,” she said.

“Yet when they went back to Tahrir to ask for their rights they were told: not now.”

She added that conservative groups questioned women’s participation in the public sphere, attributing their position to women’s perceived role in Islam.

“The Holy Quran has a whole sura [chapter], a set of 176 verses titled Al Nisa — The Women — to guarantee the rights of women.”

Rana added that the women in Tahrir Square taught her that women across the world need to continue to believe in their potential and work together as strong agents of change.

“My lesson learned is ask for your rights otherwise nobody will give them to you.”

Big Busted? Give Your Boobs The Nicki Minaj, Sofia Vergara Treatment.

Spring is officially here despite the delightful weather we’ve had weeks prior mimicking it. Besides stinging insects and longer days, the equinox ushers in swaying backsides in the most coveted item of the season—springtime dresses. This drop-top weather with a hint of warm air is a precursor for women having their backs out and boobs up.

I’m all for springy dresses, especially in this season’s ambrosial color blocked hues complementing sexy, pencil-thin heels or wedges up-to-there contemplating a somersault. While personal taste can prolong the “what’s appropriate” dialogue for this flower blooming weather, we all can agree that the wrong bra can flop a look quicker than rain showers to a fresh ‘do.

We’ve seen Kim Kardashian in her fit-like-a-glove strapless dresses and wondered if she had two fairies holding up her goods underneath. Nicki Minaj has suffered a nip slip in the past but has managed to keep her bosoms under control since then. And La La Anthony’s bosom aren’t ever lop-sided, sagging, or unified (the worse), so what gives? Oh, we cannot leave out Sofia Vergara. The woman, who was once asked by her publicist to get a breast reduction, lives in strapless gowns and her recent lingerie cover for Esquire was complete boob fabulousness!

These following pointers will give you the La La treatment and can literally be the difference between whispers and compliments:

Get professionally fitted: Enough with guessing your bra size. Schedule a professional fitting. No, it doesn’t matter if you’ve been wearing a particular size for years; women’s bodies can change from year to year. Department stores as Nordstrom provide free fittings. I would opt for a large department store since their range would include bras for bustier women.

Spend the extra money: Let’s face it; some items can’t take the cheap route. Brassieres for busty women are one of them! Well architected bras designed to give real support are expensive. No way around it, spend the extra dollars.

Know what your boobs can handle: You’re properly fitted and have located a bra in your size, be honest about what dress is appropriate for your body type. If you have to give yourself that tilted head look, leave it at the store. A confident choice is an immediate buy.

Tricks of the trade: Save the extra for a later time, pick a simple, basic fabric without lace or frills. Support is the main factor and you don’t want to spoil your chances with unflattering bumps due to undergarment. Longline bras (think instant lift) should be a staple. These lifesavers smooth your midsection and give you extra support. Wire bras are not necessary for lift, but preference can override here. Molded cups provide you with an illusion of the perfect set while providing separation. Light foam can offer frontal coverage without a bulky look. If you fluctuate in weight, get your bra (after all it is expensive) professionally altered along the straps (not cups). Go for full coverage. It’s senseless to cater to any other bra type when your cups aren’t completing surrounding your boob. Don’t get caught up in the “sexy” hype. Having the best undergarment that fits eloquently is the best sexy there is.

Here’s to meeting spring with better boobs!

Rihanna Dresses Down To Flaunt New Tattoo To Blue Ivy Carter.

Rihanna’s New York City visit consisted of the “Birthday Cake” singer dropping by the Carters, Jay-Z and Beyonce, to flaunt her new tattoo to Blue Ivy Carter.

Yep, Rih Rih has added another tattoo to her body of work—a tiny cross.

“We cut the color with water, so it’ll end up being light like the ‘rebelle’ tattoo on her neck,” said Bang Bang, her tattoo artist. “She loved it. She always flips out (when it’s done) and jumps up and down like a 16-year-old girl getting her first car.”

The usually scantily clad singer-performer and boobs flasher in a sheer top without a bra just last week, was uncharacteristically covered up.

The blonde beauty, who recently complained of her weight loss, wore an over sized black coat with leather arms, high crew neck printed black t-shirt, baggy jeans and black combat boots.

What’s that about?

Ironically, the Sun reports the 24-year-old took daring risks with her fashion because she was insecure about her body and flouncing around in bare-there outfits cured her body issues.

“The more I got naked, the more comfortable I felt. I just had to face my fear. I just started being more daring.” Or did Beyonce order her to cover her unmentionables around Blue Ivy….hmm…just kidding. The ‘Rude Boy’ singer then headed off to JFK.

Kim Kardashian: I Might Press Charges Against Flour Bomber.

Kim Kardashian doesn’t want the flour bombers of the world to win.

After gracefully dealing with an obnoxious flour-bombing prank at Thursday’s launch bash for her True Reflection fragrance, the 31-year-old reality star told E! News that she might take legal action with her assailant.”I said earlier no I wasn’t [going to file a complaint],” said Kardashian of the unidentified woman who dumped a bag of flour on her on the red carpet outside Hollywood’s London Hotel. “I am just going to think about it, because I don’t want someone to think they can really get away with that. So we are going to handle that.”

After the shocking stunt, the single Keeping Up with the Kardashians star exited the red carpet as onlookers looked stunned and workers vacuumed up the mess. She returned shortly thereafter, cleaned up and in good spirits, cracking jokes about the stunt to reporters.

In her late Friday chat with E!, Kardashian pointed out that the event (the band Carolina Liars played) was also a benefit for the Dress for Success foundation — which made the stunt seriously disruptive.

“That’s what the event was about,” she said. “These women flew in from all over the country to be a part of this event, that are underprivileged women, that really got the shine taken away from them a little bit . . . I feel bad that it was kind of derailed from that.”

Also disturbing: The prospect of getting attacked with a mysterious white substance.

“I think, ‘What if that was some other substance? What if that person had a dangerous weapon?’ It’s scary. And what’s even scarier is this woman acted as if she was a part of the press,” she noted. “She just came out of nowhere! And so we are definitely changing things up a little bit, amping up security, taking some measures, and…I’m gonna definitely deal with it because it is not acceptable.”
